Program Overview

Group Description

The A Life In Balance, Emotional Mastery DBT Skills Training Group is a therapist-led, virtual Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills program focused on practical skill development and real-life application.

DBT skills training works alongside your individual therapy — it builds the skills, and your individual work helps you apply them. Because of this, all participants must be in ongoing individual therapy to enroll. If you aren't currently working with an individual therapist, individual therapy is available through A Life In Balance (see below).

Choose the Group That Fits

  • DBT Skills Group (General) — open to anyone appropriate for skills training who's currently in individual therapy. Teaches the core DBT skills through structured instruction, discussion, and real-life practice.

  • BPD-Focused DBT Skills Group —a dedicated group for participants with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. This group teaches the same DBT skills through a guided case study, following one character's story on film to see how the skills play out in real, relatable moments. Requires a documented BPD diagnosis and ongoing individual therapy.

Both groups run 24 weeks, follow the same structured format, and cost the same. What differs is how the skills are taught and the materials used — each tailored to the group's focus.

The Four Core DBT Skill Modules

  • Mindfulness – building awareness and presence

  • Distress Tolerance – navigating crises without making things worse

  • Emotion Regulation – understanding and managing intense emotions

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness – communicating needs and setting boundaries effectively
